There are two main reasons that you would choose to make a brush-on mold instead of a solid rubber mold.

The first is cost. The larger the original, the more expensive it would be to create a solid mold, and the more you should think about using the brush-on method. Brush-on molds use much less material and still have the ability to pick up very fine detail.

Secondly, in certain instances, there are no other options BUT to use brush on products. If you are replicating an architectural detail, in order to make a solid mold, you would have to remove the heavy piece from the wall or ceiling, possibly destroying its integrity. But by brushing rubber on the surface, you can obtain all the detail on site without damaging the original, and complete the mold off-site.
